PACKED vzw: Public Domain Day BE 2019 offers IP training for heritage professionals

21.01 - 21.12.18 event

Professionals in the heritage sector want to fulfil their mission towards opening up their collections to the taxpayer but are often prevented in doing so by confusing intellectual property legislation. Public Domain Day is intended to raise awareness about the public domain and to support heritage professionals to make out-of-copyright heritage collections freely available to the citizen for reuse. The event on monday 21-01-2019 invites a range of speakers from the heritage sector and (creative) reusers alike to talk about their practice with opening up or reusing collections.

The public domain consists of all the creative works to which no exclusive intellectual property rights apply. Those rights may have expired, been forfeited, expressly waived, or may be inapplicable. Public Domain Day BE 2019 is a project of the Royal Library of Belgium, PACKED vzw, Constant vzw, Plus-tôt Te laat and Cinema Nova with the goal of raising awareness about the public domain and to concretely make out-of-copyright heritage collections freely available to the citizen for reuse. The event on monday 21-01-2019 invites a range of speakers from the heritage sector and (creative) reusers alike to talk about their practice with regard to opening up or reusing collections. The event is targeted specifically at members of the heritage sector in order to learn and exchange experiences.

On thursday 24/01 Constant vzw, Nova Cinema and Plus-tôt Te laat celebrate the synchronous demise and resurrection of public domain artists with a blasphemous collage, a display window-exhibition filled with projections-on-projections, re-drawings and remixes. This gothic edition of Constant_V revives the works in ways we could not have imagined without the freedom to use, copy, interpret and reproduce their respective oeuvres. More info about the opening on the Facebook event page.

Cinema Nova plans screenings of the Belgian director Jacques Feyder(in public domain since 2019) in april, date .t.b.a.
